5 Project Management Courses and Certifications to Consider in 2026

There is no single “best” project management course for every professional. The right option depends on your experience, the type of projects you work on, the employers or clients you want to serve, and whether you need a broad project-management credential, a governance method, or an agile framework.
This guide compares five widely recognised learning and certification paths using current 2026 information from the organisations that own them. It does not rank them, and it does not assume that a credential guarantees a promotion, salary increase or job.

1. PMP: for experienced project leaders
The Project Management Professional (PMP) is designed for people who already have substantial professional project experience. PMI’s July 2026 examination outline uses several education-and-experience pathways. For example, a candidate with a recognised bachelor’s degree or higher needs at least 36 months of non-overlapping experience leading projects within the previous 10 years, while a candidate with upper-secondary education needs 60 months. PMI’s training requirement is normally 35 hours of project-management education, although an active CAPM can fulfil that training requirement.

Choose PMP when:
- you already lead or direct projects;
- you want a broad credential rather than a single delivery framework;
- the organisations you work with recognise PMI certifications;
- you can document the required professional experience.
PMP is not an entry-level qualification. If you do not yet meet the experience requirement, CAPM or a practical foundation course may be more appropriate.
2. CAPM: for foundational project-management knowledge
PMI’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) has a much lower experience barrier. As of 2026, PMI lists a secondary degree or global equivalent, a minimum age of 18, and at least 23 hours of project-management education before the exam. The current exam covers project-management fundamentals, predictive approaches, agile approaches and business analysis.

Choose CAPM when:
- you are moving into project work from another function;
- you coordinate projects but do not yet have enough experience for PMP;
- you want a structured foundation across predictive and agile concepts;
- you want a PMI credential before progressing toward PMP.
The previous version of this article incorrectly described an old CAPM experience requirement and an obsolete curriculum. Those details should not be used for current planning.
3. PRINCE2 Project Management Version 7: for structured governance and tailoring
PeopleCert now uses the name PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation/Practitioner (Version 7). The Foundation level introduces the method, while Practitioner focuses on applying and tailoring it in real project situations.

PeopleCert’s 2026 naming update is important because many older articles still refer to “PRINCE2 6th Edition” or use earlier naming. Those references are now stale.
Choose PRINCE2 when:
- your organisation uses or expects the PRINCE2 method;
- you need a clear governance structure for roles, stages and decision points;
- you want to learn how to tailor a defined project method rather than only study general project-management knowledge.
4. Professional Scrum Master / PSM I: for Scrum-based product delivery
Scrum.org separates training from certification. It recommends professional training, but a class is not mandatory before attempting its certification assessments. PSM I tests understanding of Scrum and the Scrum Master role, and Scrum.org states that its professional Scrum certifications do not require renewal once earned.
Official Professional Scrum Master classes include an attempt at the PSM I assessment, and participants who take the first attempt within the stated period may be eligible for a second attempt under Scrum.org’s class policy.
Choose this path when:
- your work uses Scrum;
- you need to understand empiricism, Scrum events, accountabilities and artefacts;
- you are moving toward Scrum Master or product-delivery responsibilities;
- you want a Scrum-specific assessment rather than a broad project-management credential.
Do not choose a Scrum certification simply because “agile” appears in a job description. First check whether the role actually uses Scrum or another delivery approach.
5. PMI-ACP: for practitioners with real agile experience
PMI-ACP is broader than a single agile framework. PMI’s March 2026 examination content outline describes domains covering mindset, leadership, product and delivery. Current eligibility includes a secondary diploma, formal agile training, and an agile-experience pathway. One standard pathway requires two years of agile experience within the previous five years; alternatives exist for GAC graduates, holders of qualifying third-party agile certifications, and active PMP holders.

Choose PMI-ACP when:
- you already work with agile or hybrid delivery;
- your experience spans more than one framework;
- you want a credential that tests agile capability beyond introductory Scrum knowledge;
- you can meet PMI’s current experience and training requirements.
How to choose between the five
Start with the work you actually do rather than the credential name.

Questions to ask before paying for a course
- Does the credential match the roles I want? Search current job descriptions in your target market rather than relying on a provider’s salary promise.
- Am I eligible? Check the certification owner’s website, because requirements and exam outlines change.
- Is the provider authorised where authorisation matters? Verify provider status in the certification owner’s directory when applicable.
- Will I practise real decisions? Good preparation should involve scenarios, planning, trade-offs and application, not only memorising terminology.
- What does the certificate actually mean? Distinguish a course-completion certificate from an externally assessed professional certification.
- What ongoing maintenance is required? Some credentials require continuing professional development; others do not.
What this article no longer claims
The previous version opened with an unsupported statement that 70% of projects fail without proper management, described PRINCE2 6th Edition as current, used obsolete CAPM requirements and included an unverifiable named testimonial. Those claims have been removed.
A professional certification can strengthen structured knowledge and provide a recognised signal. It cannot guarantee employment, promotion, salary growth or project success. The useful question is whether a particular learning path closes a real capability gap for the work you want to do.
